Laundry Bag – Free Sewing Tutorial

This is not a downloadable pattern. It’s a video tutorial in English showing how to make a laundry bag from scratch.

This is the perfect project for your first ever sew. It’s simple, quick and results in a useful bag to use around the house. Since it will never leave the house, it doesn’t matter if your stitching is a little wonky or it has imperfections, because no-one outside your house will ever see it!

I use one of these as a laundry bag and another to store my recycling (here in Cornwall, we have to clean our recycling out so something like this is perfect for storing it until recycling day).

Tools Required:

  • Domestic sewing machine
  • Universal size 75/11 needle
  • Some pins or wonder clips
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
  • Quilting ruler
  • Cutting mat
  • Seam ripper (just in case)
  • Fabric marker such as a heat erasable pen or tailors chalk

Cutting List:

Exterior canvas fabric:

  • 1 piece at 11″ x 11″
  • 4 pieces at 35″ x 11″
  • 2 pieces at 19″ x 6″

Lining canvas/cotton fabric:

  • 1 piece at 11″ x 11″
  • 4 pieces at 35″ x 11″

Base stabiliser (Peltex 71F or S520, Decovil Heavy, or anything that’s washable and works well at stabilising the base):

  • 1 piece at 10″ x 10″
