What’s Special About This Sewing Pattern?

Slings are popular right now, and I can see why. But I wanted to design something different, and most importantly, really comfortable to wear (I’m all about the comfort!)

I also wanted this bag to be suitable for hiking so a large separate bottle pocket that can be accessed without opening the bag was essential. To make it truly practical, the bag has a cushioned foam back panel, an inner slip pocket for your phone, a key keeper, and an inner zip pocket for your other valuables. The main compartment is also really spacious and can carry a lot more than you think.

The standard pattern size for this bag is a very generous size and is ideal for us tall ones (5′ 10″ and up). But the pattern includes tips throughout for scaling it down if you prefer a smaller size. You can also choose which should you want the bag to go over, your left or right. Below is an example of two prototypes I made, one at 100% and the other at 80% size.

FINISHED BAG SIZE: 18” tall x 13” wide x ½” deep [45.75cm x 33cm x 1.25cm].
The bottle pocket is 9” [23cm] tall with space for a 4” [10cm] diameter bottle.

Instructions are included to scale the bag down to a smaller size!

What Fabrics Could You Use?

Quilting cotton or canvas are great options for making this bag. More experienced sewists may want to give cork or vinyl a try. Whatever fabrics you decide to use, make sure they’re suitable for your sewing machine. For domestic machines, it’s usually best to stick with cotton fabrics, especially for your first bag.
