The Muerqo Tote by Country Cow Designs is one of the most versatile bag patterns we’ve had
the pleasure of teaching in our studio. Designed with a timeless silhouette and plenty of room
for creativity, it’s become a favorite among our students and customers alike. Over time, we’ve
seen so many beautiful interpretations, proof that this pattern can reflect your personal style,
whether bold and colorful or sleek and neutral.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to customize the Muerqo Tote
- Play with Prints and Solids
Pairing a striking print with a contrasting or coordinating solid gives the bag instant personality.
Florals, geometrics, or even whimsical prints shine when balanced with a solid accent on the
center, sides, or straps
- Bold Color Blocking
For a clean, modern look, try color blocking with three solid fabrics. A striking combination we
love is white, black, and cinnamon it feels polished yet playful. Another favorite is beige,
caramel, and navy, paired with a unique quilting design to make each panel stand out.
- Mix Your Materials
The Muerqo Tote works beautifully in cotton, canvas, vinyl, or cork, and it’s even more striking
when you combine them. Imagine cotton for the sides, vinyl for the center, and cork accents on
the straps for durability and style.
- Elevate with Hardware
Small details can completely change the look. Adding chains to the straps instantly gives the
tote a more elevated, fashion-forward feel. Unique zipper pulls like: stars for a patriotic version
or keys to match a printed vinyl add a thoughtful finishing touch.
- Add a Recessed Zipper
If you prefer a secure closure, a recessed zipper is a perfect modification. It not only adds
function but also creates a polished, professional finish that makes the tote look store-bought
(in the best way!)

Workshops and Studio Experience
At My Handmade Space in Methuen, Massachusetts, we’ve taught the Muerqo Tote in our
workshops and “Sew Social” sessions many times. It’s always a hit, because each student brings
their own creative spin—no two totes are ever alike!
If you’re based in the U.S. or planning to travel, we’d love to welcome you to our store and
studio. You can shop fabrics, vinyl, cork, and hardware in person, and even join one of our
classes to make your own version of the Muerqo Tote.
The beauty of the Muerqo Tote is that it’s a blank canvas for your creativity. Whether you’re
experimenting with colors, fabrics, or hardware, each variation feels like a brand-new bag.
That’s why it continues to be such a popular project in our studio and why we keep coming back
to it again and again.
