After hours of sewing your bag, you want it to last years, especially if you sell your bags or gift them to friends and family. So what steps can you take to make your bag live longer?

Don’t trim your webbing or zip tape

When you start your bag making journey, you may feel tempted to trim the excess off everything, including zips and webbing, to make it match your seam allowance. Don’t do this. Leaving excess webbing and zip tape will add strength to the straps and ensure your bag lasts longer. If you’re in any of the bag making groups on Facebook, I’m sure you’ve seen the many posts about straps and zips coming out of the seam after the bag has been used for a couple of months. Leaving excess in the seam can play a big part in preventing this from happening.

Materials and fabrics want to fray, even within the seam allowance. So if you trim these parts of the bag, you may find after a few months your strap connector pulls out of the seam or the zip pull comes off the end of the zip. Don’t trim webbing or zip tape, and for extra longevity I melt the end of nylon webbing and zip tape with a quick flame as this stops it from fraying in the future. Alternatively, I use Fray check or fabric glue on the ends.

Don’t trim the end of the webbing

Add stabiliser and tape to the back of prong fittings

Bags will often include features like magnetic snaps and bag feet. These are usually fitted with prongs that you fold over inside the bag. Once fitted, you may assume they will be fine forever. But we’ve learned the benefits of adding some stabiliser and tape to the back of these fittings. Over years of use, this will prevent the prongs rubbing through the layers of your bag and tearing the fabric. It’s easy to forget that interfacing is essential to a strong bag. What weight of interfacing you use will depend on the material you’re using, but it’s an important step as interfacing strengthens the seam and stops fabrics like cotton from fraying over time. The tip of a needle is designed for a specific material. For example, a leather needle is designed to cut through the layers, whereas a universal needle will “poke” through. This means a leather needle will cut strands in cotton and could cause it to rip along the seam. This won’t be completely obvious at the time you’re sewing it, but you’ll know later on when the bag starts to fall apart with use. Using too short a stitch length could also cause the same issue, especially for materials like cork and vinyl. For fabrics like that, be sure to use a longer stitch length. I tend to use a 3-4 stitch length for construction and 4-5 for topstitching.

Add an extra stitch line

This is a simple way of adding strength to a bag. After you’ve sewn a seam together, sew along the same seam but further in, about 1/8″ (0.3mm). We often show this in our video tutorials. My favourite place to do this is on important exterior seams such as box corners. La pointe d’une aiguille est conçue pour un matériau spécifique. Par exemple, une aiguille en cuir est conçue pour couper les couches, tandis qu’une aiguille universelle va « percer » à travers.
