Binding bags seems to be a divisive sewing technique. People either love it or they hate it. Some people avoid binding at all costs and won’t touch a sewing pattern that includes binding. They hate either the idea of it, or the actual process itself. Maybe you’ve tried it once and had a tough time with it. I myself avoided binding for quite some time when I first starting bag making, not because of my own experience, but because of the opinions and experiences of others.<\/p>\n

Should you give binding another try? Is binding a technique that’s worth learning?<\/p>\n

In this blog post I’m going discuss the benefits of binding and four reasons you should try using binding in your bags.<\/h2>\n

    Structure & Shape<\/h2>\n

    This, in my opinion, is the most important reason to use binding in certain bags. When you bind the inside seams of a bag, it adds stiffness to the edge. This causes the seam to become more like a skeleton inside the bag, forcing the bag to keep it’s shape. This actually makes a huge difference to the finished look on the outside of your bag, even though it’s the inside that has the binding. It gives the seams structure and results in a more professional looking finish.<\/p>\n

    Below is a picture of two identical bags I made when writing the Vekza sewing pattern.<\/a> One was made by turning the bag out, the other was made with binding on the interior seams. Check out the difference in shape! The bag with binding has a much better finish. And when the bag is in use, the difference is even more noticeable as the bag retains it’s shape better. This was the deciding factor in me using binding in the Vekza sewing pattern<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Of course, binding doesn’t work for all styles of bag. You’ll notice we don’t use binding in any of our crossbody or handbag patterns, for example in our Teloujay<\/a> and Muerqo<\/a> sewing patterns.<\/p>\n

    Generally though, bowler bags, backpacks and very big bags hold their structure better when binding is used on the inside of the seams.<\/p>\n

    Durability<\/h2>\n

    In some ways this is linked to the benefit of structure and shape. The binding helps the bag to keep it’s shape. Because the bag keeps it’s shape, it wears better overall. The stabiliser and fabric isn’t working so hard which adds to the bags overall durability.\u00a0The binding covers and protects the raw edge of the fabric from fraying, which can extend the life of the bag.<\/p>\n

    Aesthetics<\/h2>\n

    This is linked again to the idea of structure and stability. Because the bag has the binding holding it up like a skeleton, the bag naturally keeps it’s shape better which is more aesthetically pleasing, especially when the bag is in use.<\/p>\n

    The photo below shows the same bags as earlier. The bag with binding is on the left. The seams are more rounded and structured. The bag on the right has been “birthed” instead and the seams don’t hold their shape as well. The arrows show where the seams are not holding their shape as well as we’d like.<\/p>\n

    It’s one thing to get a bag to look great in photos, but you also want it to look fabulous when it’s being used every day, not collapsing every time the bag is empty. Binding helps with that. Although we tend to use it on the inside of the bag, binding can be made from fabric that contrasts or compliments the lining fabric, adding depth and texture to the inside of your bag. For your next bag with binding, try using a funky coloured binding that contrasts with your lining fabric. It’ll add some excitement to the inside of your bag!<\/p>\n

    Create bigger bags<\/h2>\n

    Yes you can create a large bag without binding. However, it’s going to require a lot of stabiliser to keep it’s shape and stop the bag from collapsing in on itself when it’s empty. This is going to result in a heavy bag due to the combination of it’s size and all that stabiliser. You can get some nice photos of the bag by filling it with towels or something similar, but when you’re using it every day it will loose it’s shape and look floppy if it’s not packed out with things.<\/p>\n

    However, if you use binding in your bag making, you can make BIG bags, like this Sedron backpack<\/a>, and they hold their shape even when empty.<\/p>\n

    Duffle bags, such as our Travel Light duffle bag pattern<\/a>, are another example of big bags that hold their shape when empty, thanks to the structure created with the binding.<\/p>\n

    So that’s four reasons why we love to use binding at Country Cow Designs. We don’t use it for every single pattern, but for certain styles, shapes and sizes, it’s a great technique.<\/p>\n

    If you’ve not tried binding before, give our Travel Light Duffle bag pattern<\/a> a try. The pattern is suitable for beginner bag makers and is a great place to start your binding journey. After all, it’s a duffle bag, so your binding doesn’t have to look perfect. When you’re cramming it full of stuff for a weekend away, you won’t be worried if your binding isn’t super neat.<\/p>\n

      C\u2019est, \u00e0 mon avis, la raison la plus importante d\u2019utiliser la finition au biais dans certains sacs. Lorsque vous liez les coutures int\u00e9rieures d\u2019un sac au biais, cela ajoute de la rigidit\u00e9 aux bords. Cela fait que la couture ressemble davantage \u00e0 un squelette \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du sac, for\u00e7ant le sac \u00e0 garder sa forme. Cela fait une \u00e9norme diff\u00e9rence pour l\u2019aspect fini \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de votre sac, m\u00eame si c\u2019est l\u2019int\u00e9rieur qui a le biais.       Vous trouverez ci-dessous une photo de deux sacs identiques que j\u2019ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9s lors de l\u2019\u00e9criture du patron de couture Vekza.<\/a> L\u2019un a \u00e9t\u00e9 fait en retournant le sac, l\u2019autre a \u00e9t\u00e9 fait avec une finition au biais sur les coutures int\u00e9rieures. D\u00e9couvrez la diff\u00e9rence de forme! Le sac avec biais a une bien meilleure finition. Et lorsque le sac est utilis\u00e9, la diff\u00e9rence est encore plus perceptible car le sac conserve mieux sa forme. Ce fut le facteur d\u00e9cisif dans l\u2019utilisation du biais dans le \u00a0patron de couture Vekza<\/a>.<\/p>\n

      Bien s\u00fbr, le biais ne fonctionne pas pour tous les styles de sac. Vous remarquerez que nous n\u2019utilisons pas de biais dans nos patrons de bandouli\u00e8re ou de sac \u00e0 main, par exemple dans nos patrons <\/a>de couture Teloujay et <\/a>Muerqo.<\/p>\n

      Ceci est li\u00e9 \u00e0 nouveau \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de structure et de stabilit\u00e9. Parce que le sac a le biais qui le maintien comme un squelette, le sac garde naturellement sa forme facilement, ce qui est plus esth\u00e9tique, surtout lorsque le sac est utilis\u00e9.<\/p>\n

      La photo ci-dessous montre les m\u00eames sacs que pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment. Le sac avec biais est \u00e0 gauche. Les coutures sont plus arrondies et structur\u00e9es. Le sac de droite a \u00e9t\u00e9 retourn\u00e9 et les coutures ne conservent pas aussi bien leur forme. Les fl\u00e8ches indiquent o\u00f9 les coutures ne tiennent pas leur forme aussi bien que nous le voudrions.<\/p>\n

      C\u2019est une chose de faire en sorte qu\u2019un sac soit parfait pour les photos, mais vous voulez aussi qu\u2019il soit fabuleux lorsqu\u2019il est utilis\u00e9 tous les jours, sans s\u2019effondrer chaque fois que le sac est vide. Le biais aide \u00e0 cela. Bien que nous ayons tendance \u00e0 l\u2019utiliser \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du sac, le biais peut \u00eatre fait \u00e0 partir de tissu qui contraste ou compl\u00e8te le tissu de doublure, ajoutant de la profondeur et de la texture \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de votre sac. Pour votre prochain sac avec biais, essayez d\u2019utiliser un biais de couleur qui contraste avec votre tissu de doublure. Cela ajoutera un peu d\u2019excitation \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de votre sac !<\/p>\n

      CR\u00c9EZ DES SACS PLUS GRANDS<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      Oui, vous pouvez cr\u00e9er un grand sac sans biais. Cependant, il faudra beaucoup d\u2019entoilage pour garder sa forme et emp\u00eacher le sac de s\u2019effondrer sur lui-m\u00eame lorsqu\u2019il est vide. Cela va se traduire par un sac lourd en raison de la combinaison de sa taille et de tout cet entoilage. Vous pouvez obtenir de belles photos du sac en le remplissant de serviettes ou quelque chose de similaire, mais lorsque vous l\u2019utilisez tous les jours, il perdra sa forme et aura l\u2019air souple s\u2019il n\u2019est pas emball\u00e9 avec des choses.<\/p>\n

      Cependant, si vous utilisez le biais dans la fabrication de vos sacs, vous pouvez faire de GROS sacs, comme ce sac \u00e0 dos Sedron<\/a>, et ils conservent leur forme m\u00eame lorsqu\u2019ils sont vides.<\/p>\n

Le patron convient aux fabricants de sacs d\u00e9butants et constitue un excellent endroit pour commencer votre voyage de biais. Apr\u00e8s tout, c\u2019est un sac de voyage, donc votre biais n\u2019a pas besoin d\u2019\u00eatre parfait. Lorsque vous le bourrez de choses pour un week-end, vous ne serez pas inquiet si votre couture n\u2019est pas super soign\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

      J\u2019utilise \u00e9galement une technique diff\u00e9rente quand je pose le biais.
